Be A Self Builder – Part 3

I hope you enjoyed the last article about Developing a Positive Attitude.

As we continue this series about Success Core Principles from W. Clement Stone I hope to give you the value of these important principles.

 The third principle is:

 Embrace failure.

“With a positive mental attitude failure is a learning experience, a rung on the ladder, a plateau at which to get your thoughts in order and prepare to try again.”

I don’t necessarily believe in failure. Let me give you an example. If you are driving to a destination and you make a wrong turn and you don’t get to the destination, Is that a failure?  What do you do? Don’t you “adjust” what you have done and correct those actions to get to the results you want. Failure occurs when there are no other options. For the majority of us there is always another option. As Tony Little has titled his new book;       “There’s always a way”.

When you were a baby and you fell down so many times learning how to walk, did your parents say “This is too much for my child” and stop you from attempting to walk and explore? No, they let you figure this walking thing out and in the process you fell down, maybe scraped your knee or got a few bumps. And you survived!

What this idea means is that we will face challenges in our lives that seem very hard to overcome. But we must control our mind not to give up but to keep going, to find that alternate path or correct method to achieve our goal.

I lost my mother to cancer when I was only 6 years old. I had to keep going. I really didn’t have any options of stopping my life.  I figured out that it wasn’t my fault that she passed away. I just had to live with the change and keep moving forward. It was not easy by any means.

Sometimes we may have to swallow our pride and ask for help from others.  We may have to say “I’m Sorry” or “I was wrong”.  Being able to acknowledge that you are human is part of life. Let’s share the fact that we are human by helping others.

Be A Self Builder – Part 2

I hope you enjoyed the last article about Seeking clarity of purpose.

As we continue this series about Success Core Principles from W. Clement Stone I hope to give you the value of these important principles.

 The second principle is:

Develop a positive attitude.

“There is little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative.”  As Zig Ziglar always says “you can do much more with a positive attitude than you ever can do with a negative attitude”.

So why do we let the negative attitudes creep into our mind? Yes life has it’s trials and tribulations that test us constantly and we get tired.  Yet everyday we have the opportunity to wake up and get a “re-do”. We can be appreciative that we are on the green side of the grass seeing the day, our family and having an opportunity to “DO” today.  Grasp that opportunity and TAKE ACTION toward your goal with a positive attitude.

It is easy to start this. When you wake up, be thankful that you woke up. Then smile.  Yes I said smile, no matter how early you get up, before your cup of coffee,  When you go to work, smile in the office. People will either wonder what is wrong with you or wonder what you’re up to. They may even start up a conversation. Tell a quick joke or make them laugh. Share that smile and a positive attitude and watch how good your day goes.

Now as the day goes on we can follow the “flow” of the day and get buried in the issues of the day. Take a moment and smile again, get away from your desk and walk outside.  Look at the green grass, bird in the air, the rain coming down, whatever. Realize you get to see and or hear these things, no matter what they are. Smile again and go back to what you need to do. Share that smile with someone and see how you feel. When you give your positive attitude the benefits come back ten-fold.  When someone asks how are you? Don’t tell them your woes, tell them “Your Great!” Like Tony the Tiger. Then smile and or laugh.  They will smile and laugh as well.  Share your positive attitude to enlightens someone’s day.

Are You Lucky?

I received an interesting article on St. Patrick’s day that talked about luck and had an image of the Ace of Spades and the Words “Be Lucky” on the card. What I found interesting is the definition of Luck:

“A Force that makes things happen”

Are you the force that makes things happen in your life? If not, why? Who’s life is it anyway?  Be the Force not “may the Force be with you”.  Don’t ask to make things happen, don’t assume things will happen. You will be correct, things will happen, but they won’t be to your benefit most of the time. You can make things happen. It will take effort and Action.

Yet, when you Take Action you will get results. Good or bad, they are results and you learn from them, adjust your next Action and keep going after your goal.

Be A Self Builder

I received an interesting article from “Seeds of Success” and I want to expand on the ideas of the article.

W. Clement Stone thought of himself as a “self-builder” and ultimately became a pioneer in personal development, publishing Success Unlimited in 1954, the predecessor to SUCCESS magazine.

Stone documented his philosophies in the personal development classic he co-authored with Napoleon Hill in 1960, Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude. I will be going over some of his core principles in a series to “escalate our knowledge”. The first Principle is:

Seek clarity of purpose.

“All personal achievement starts in the mind of the individual. Your personal achievement starts in your mind. I write a quote everyday that is similar to this principle – “Belief is the catalyst that sets action in motion”.  This allows me to start to achieve my goal first with the belief that I can achieve it and my belief gives me the encouragement to TAKE ACTION towards my goal.

So how do you figure out what your goal is?  The first step is to know exactly what your problem, goal or desire is.” Take some time away from the everyday rat race and think. Find a spot where no one knows where you are, turn off your cell phone and think about what you want. Financial freedom, business growth, health, good grades, stable marriage, whatever.

The next step is setting your belief system to the fact that you CAN achieve the goal you want. Feed your subconscious mind the fact that you will achieve what you want. Your subconscious mind doesn’t interpret this thought as good bad or indifferent, it takes it as fact.

As your belief grows, you will need to TAKE ACTION towards your goal. This does not necessarily mean that you will achieve your goal in one day. If you want to build your business you need to build your contacts. How can you do that? Ever hear of Facebook, LinkedIn and many other social media sites? What about local venues/meetings that other people in your industry attend?  Go to these meetings/venues and TALK to people. Don’t just go for the food.  Take Action toward a bigger goal and you will start to see the benefits as you get closer to your goal.  And don’t be afraid to “adjust” your goal if you need to. Life brings change and you may need to adjust your path towards your goal a bit to achieve what you want.  Be adaptable to the change to move towards your goal but keep moving.  If fish stop swimming, they sink. Don’t sink.
